Steeves'
Summary #29: The Lord of the Harvest
March
2006
Rain over
the Great Rift
Valley
"Do you not say, 'Four
months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look
at the fields! They are ripe for harvest." John 4:35
Three
weeks ago there was a cyclone in the Indian Ocean. The
weather system pulled moist air from Congo into western and central
Kenya, resulting in a week of substantial, unseasonal rains.
The brown grass is now green, dry wells have water again, and many
people have planted their gardens. The
livestock that was looking so gaunt are able to eat the lush green
grass again. God sent a miracle in the form a cyclone to help
people who were desperately in need. North-East province was
not so fortunate. The situation in Garissa and Dadaab is
still very serious and relief food will been needed for months to
come. Please continue to pray that the expected seasonal
rains in April will be good. Please also consider giving to
help supply food for those who are in desperate need.
Blanket
update
Bernadine writes:
Lots of great
opportunities are coming
up thanks to the blanket project.
I went out in the African community with a group of fifteen
people from the local AIC church. I was the only
Mzunugu(white person) to visit a widower and his 3 children. This was
the group's first meeting in four years and it was neat how I got in on
it. We had a Kikuyu service in his home and gave him things like food,
money and blankets. A month later, while visiting
an
elderly widow who was sick, this man showed up at her house and
professed to the group that he had become a Christian after our visit
to his home. He plans to visit the community with us once a
month
from now on. Isn't that amazing!
Another good contact I have had is a local business woman, Thenya. When
I asked her if she knew of anyone who needed blankets, she told me I
was an answer to prayer. She stated that her and her husband had been
praying for the last 4-5 years for God to use them to reach the poor.
She knows that my blankets will run out but now is encouraged that God
will eventually provide some other basic needs like clothing and food
for the poor through her church family. Thenya and I went to visit a
couple of homes and a lady from the second home made a commitment
during our visit. We plan to deliver some more blankets in
the
community this week with others from her Baptist church.
Two churches in Kijabe exist side-by-side with the same vision and
starting their ministry within the same month. It is neat how God used
me to be a part of both of these church projects.
Fun
with the dorm
Every term
we have "Dorm Parties" where we have a day or evening of fun with the
dorm. We learned that there was an ice rink in Nairobi that
opened in December. All the girls wanted to go, so we decided
to take them there for dorm parties. It was a full day's
outing,
with the girls having a rare opportunity to go shopping
afterwards. Everyone had fun, and
the girls were amazing skaters considering that very few of them had any experience on ice.
It is hard to
believe
that second term is over. The end of term was busy for the
girls
due to projects and exams. It was a relief for them to be
able to
head
home to spend the month with family.
Blessings,
Michael,
Bernadine, Julianne and Evan
