Steeves' Summary Volume 2 #3: The Number One Question                              June 2009

Everywhere we go, people are asking with great curiosity, “How are the children feeling about going back to Africa?"  Being the detailed person that I am, the answer is usually not a one sentence answer but rather an elaborate explaination. Sorry to all those who have asked THE question at inconvenient times. I couldn't help myself!

I would be lying to you if I told you Julianne has been miserable living in Canada in the last 2 years. At age 14, she has blossomed into a wonderful young lady who has a passion for life and lives to tell good stories. Julianne has a broad group of friends. She has excelled in middle school and has decided to go to Saint John High next year, a high school further from home and friends but with more challenging courses available. Her confidence shines like many other missionary kids I have met, always ready to face another challenge while avoiding the easier route. Julianne wrote in her yearbook her aspirations is to live in Africa and then go to university. I have no doubt that she'll continue to shine as she prepares for Africa. I think of all the exciting stories she will be able to tell of her incredible journey!

When Evan found out we would be returning to Kenya, he showed his acceptance mostly through his expressions and actions. Evan is usually a person of a few words unless he is really excited about something. There have been many days that Evan and I have walked home from school while he has shared his memories of Kenya and his plans when he returns. Some of his plans include climbing Mount Longonot, eating chapatis at Mama Chikus, and doing science experiments at RVA. At the same time, there is no doubt that Evan enjoys many things about living in Canada. He seems the happiest when he is playing outdoors, creating something interesting, and hanging out with friends. Thank God many of his loves are transferable to Kenya.

Like the rest of our family, the children have become part of both worlds: Canada and Kenya. We are part of each country yet we are strangers to both.

So, how will I respond next time to the question, “How are the children feeling about going back to Africa?” They feel great! It's a blessing to all be on the same page, truly a gift from God.

Teach me to do your will for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalm 143:10
