Steeves' Summary Volume 2 #5: Lasting Friendships                          August 2009

Missionary Kids who become friends overseas have a special way of finding each other, regardless of where they end up living.  Julianne's closest friends from Rift Valley Academy came to NB last month to visit.  Elissa from Michigan joined up with Brea in Ontario and together they flew to Saint John to meet up with Julianne. While anxiously waiting at the airport, Julianne learned that the combination of excitement of seeing her good friends and drinking a medium "Iced Capp" was not a good idea. She was wired!

Our family went camping with the girls in Mactaquac Park.  On our travels Elissa was able to see the ocean for the first time, witness the rolling hills of New Brunswick and see the many trees which she claimed were a different experience for her. One of Brea's highlights was when she arranged to meet her grandparents in Fredericton and unexpectedly met a newly adopted cousin. We heard lots of giggles and talk between the girls, especially around the campfire and  late at night in their tent as they remininced and caught up on two years of very different lives. There was an undeniable bond between them due to their shared experiences in Kenya.

In the twenty five years since I graduated from RVA, my MK friendships have continued.  I still keep in touch with classmates over the internet, and it has been a real treat to meet a few old friends many years after we graduated.  David and I were best friends through much of my time at RVA.  We climbed Mt. Kenya, hiked to waterfalls, and walked the beach by the Indian Ocean.  When I went back to visit my parents a few years after I graduated, David was there too.  We managed a few adventures that summer as well!  Just before we returned to Canada in 2007, David and his family came to visit Kenya.  The few days we were able to visit were great, and it was nice to finally meet his wife Robin and their twin daughters.

Our Status:  We currently have been pledged or given approximately 5% of the finances we need for our mission to Kenya. The only thing sustaining Bernadine and I in this early part of our journey is our faith, "being sure of the things we hope for and certain for what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1)  We take comfort in knowing that God not only calls some of his people to serve in other countries, but He calls many more people to support missions. The Great Commission of "making disciples of all nations" is a command for all believers in Christ. (Matthew 28)
